Arimafuji Nature Study Center
Arimafuji Shizen Gakushu Center
Arimafuji Nature Study Center (Arimafuji Shizen Gakushu Center, also known by its nickname “Laboratory of Mount Kippy [Kippy Yama no Labo]”) was constructed in collaboration with the Museum of Nature and Human Activities (Hito to Shizen no Hakubutsukan), and aims to nurture healthy and spiritually-rich children under the rich natural environment through learning the mechanisms of nature and the relationship between human and nature.
To the entrance of exhibition room of “Laboratory of Mount Kippy” are “Giant Stag Beetle Tsuyoshi”, the largest beetle figure in Japan which is popular among children, and “Sanda Exploration Map (Sanda Tanken Map) - let’s explore Sanda from the viewpoint of birds”, a picture taken from the 1,800 m above which shows our towns and schools.
You can make a shortcut to the next exhibition room through “Warp Slope”. “Great Cross Section of Nature” is outspread before us, which is the replica of Sanda’s mountains, ponds, and cross section of the Muko River. You could also enjoy “Underground Tunnel”, which goes through the underground of the mountains, as well as the replicas of Luciola cruciata Motschulsky (Genji Botaru), Luciola lateralis (Heike Botaru), and Luciola parvula (Himebotaru). A large size aquarium outside of the building called the School of Fish (Sakana no Gakko) gives you an opportunity to learn about the ecology of fish in the Muko River and ponds.
Outside the building are Mt. Arimafuji and Lake Fukushima Oike, the symbols of Sanda. “Ecology Garden of Forests (Hayashi no Seitaien)”, “Ecology Garden of Grass Fields (Kusachi no Seitaien)”, “Ecology Garden of Waterfront (Mizube no Seitaien)”, “Forests of Wild Birds (Yacho no Mori)”, and “Road of Flowers (Hana no Michi)” coordinate well with the study center and offer visitors opportunities to experience nature.
All the staff members are looking forward to your visit, preparing interesting hand-made, hands-on exhibits.
